3g cell phone network, what is it?

3G, in simple terms, refers to the third generation of development in wireless cell phone networks, especially mobile communications. The third generation, as its name suggests, follows the first generation (1G) and second generation (2G) cell phone communication technology.

When you hear the term 3g you can now associate it as the term used to describe the latest generation of cell phone services. These 3G services will provide significantly advanced voice communications and high-speed data connectivity over 2G networks. The major benefits and advances of the 3G system can be categorized thus; expanded access to the Internet (at connection speeds that are between some three times faster than a 56K dial-up modem connection to 2.4Mbps, similar to cable speed), greater fluency of mobile data applications such as multimedia content, streaming music and video, video-conferencing and 3d games. The 3G network philosophy is due to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), establishing, by working with industry standards bodies from around the world, a clear set of technical requirements and standards for 3G networks under the IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications) program.
